On my way to work, I was excited to spot an Aveda store. Even more excited when I realized that this store was also a salon offering student haircuts. Now, as a New Yorker on a budget and sporting my long hair (and I do care!) I hate paying $50 or $60 for a few inches being snipped off and no one noticing. So, when I saw the chalk board stating $20 for a cut, I skipped on in!
What a great deal is all I can say. I was immediately able to secure an appointment on Friday at 9am (Friday and Saturday are the least expensive days for cuts). When I arrived to my appointment, I was immediately greeted by beautician. She did a great job of making me feel welcome, offering me tea or water, and letting me know how the process would go. She gave me a great (and long) head massage during my shampoo. She used excellent Aveda products and left my hair in a great new style (still long) that was noticed by everyone.
This isn’t to say there weren’t some disadvantages to this budget cut. First off, because she is a student it takes a long time for the cut. My normal cut is about 45 minutes with the blow dry. This time I left at 11:15, making me a teeny bit late to work. Additionally, the initial cut of the bangs seemed off so she asked her supervising beautician to fix them. I was okay with this because the bangs looked great after. And of course, she was required to try to upsell me the products.
I would definitely go back though for the following reasons. The salon is located by my office in Soho, which makes it super accessible (C train, Spring Street is right outside). I can afford the cut. And 3 weeks later my cut still looks amazing. If you have the time, I definitely suggest checking into an appointment.
